Papers of William Waterhouse, 1782-1803 [microform]. [1782-1803]

The collection comprises the correspondence of William Waterhouse including letters from his son, Henry Waterhouse and correspondence with his daughter Elizabeth Bass and with George Bass. The collection includes a letter signed by James Luttrell, Mediator, Portsmouth, 1 May 1782, accepting Henry Waterhouse as an able seaman. There are 11 letters from Henry Waterhouse, 1788-1801, including five letters from Sydney Cove and two from Table Bay, Cape of Good Hope. In his letters Henry Waterhouse gives an account of the arrival of the First Fleet in Botany Bay and the establishment of the settlement in Sydney Cove. He reports on the discovery of Lord Howe Island by Henry Lidgbird Ball and his meeting with the French expedition led by Comte de la Perouse. His letters provide a description of Sydney's Aboriginal inhabitants and the colony's flora and fauna. The letters mention William and Elizabeth Paterson, Matthew Flinders, Bennelong, Charles Bishop, Governor Hunter, Lord Sydney, Governor Phillip and Governor King. In these letters to his father, Henry talks about his daughter Maria and also reflects on his naval career. Included in the collection is correspondence with George Bass, 1800-1803. This comprises eight autograph letters signed by George Bass, three letters to Bass signed by William Waterhouse in London and Margate, an autograph draft by Waterhouse, and a letter by Waterhouse to his daughter Elizabeth. In his letter of 8 October 1800, Bass announces that he has married Elizabeth, Waterhouse's daughter. The collection also includes correspondence with Elizabeth Bass, 1801-1803, comprising two authograph letters signed by Elizabeth Bass at Portsea, 9 January 1801 and 13 January 1801, and three letters from William Waterhouse. The latter contain Waterhouse's response to Elizabeth's unhappiness at the separation from her husband during Bass' "commercial peregrinations".
